Wake Owl is a relatively young band that comes from Vancouver and sincerely has a ton of potential. Their beautiful debut 6 song EP ‘Wild Country’ was just released at the end of January 2013 and has quickly garnered them a lot of attention – and for good reason – and it led them to such surprises as being asked to play at Bonnaroo’s smaller stage earlier this summer (side note: this author was at that show and it was one of my favorites of the entire weekend).
Colyn Cameron is the songwriter and lead singer in the band. Over on Vagrant‘s website Colyn tells us, “With this EP I was really focused on just creating recordings I could be proud of and felt connected to as a group of songs. I wanted to capture and represent, in all its instrumentation and arrangement, what those songs mean to me.” Well, Colyn should be proud of these songs, as they present a soulful, yet energetic, approach to the contemporary Americana genre. With each song taking a distinct approach from the other, but all being pleasing to the ears and mind.
Colyn is joined by Aiden Brant-Briscall, an incredibly talented violinist and vocalist, and with accompanying guitarist Josh Daignault. Their drummer, Andy Shauf, is a very talented multi-instrument playing musician in his own right that we at OurVinyl have known about for some time (not only was his 2012 album ‘The Bearer of Bad News’ spectacular, but his song “Home Town Hero” was in our June Back of the Rack free mixtape as well). So needless to say, there is a lot of talent in this band. But they hone and combine their skills with true finesse, which is easier said than done, especially for such a young band!
Below is their enchanting song “Wild Country” – but be sure to catch their entire OurVinyl.TV session here!
