With a short almost four year long career as a ‘supergroup’, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon‘s baby mash-up makes a comeback this year with a second LP, entitled Repave, ready to be spread in less than a month.
Volcano Choir’s first glimpse of what seems an exciting surprise of an album is Byegone, a mesmerizing song from the first note. Reminiscent of Sigur Rós’ atmospheres and the latest Bon Iver album mood, the way the lyrics bounce at unison around the melody just grabs you as an unstoppable guitar loop carries the song along. The last caveman-like drumming and echoed guitar licks wrapped in a choral howl add an extra, a something that is impossible to describe and that makes you rape the replay button.
That’s how you notice great songs from the rest: they are mesmerizing from the first note to the last (even though it was the same note played all along).
