Artist: Vieux Farka
Much to his father Ali Farka Touré’s dismay, Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré was drawn to music. His father, a pioneer in African music, forbade his son from becoming a musician and instead ordered that Vieux become a soldier. Regardless, Vieux studied music at the National Arts Institute in Bamako and eventually had to ask permission from his dying father to record a solo album.
“Fafa” is a steely, bluesy departure from his father’s sound. The playful and earthy song highlights Touré’s talent on the guitar, but it creates a sound entirely different than one would hear in the States.
