Artist: Van Morrison
Song: “Sweet Thing”
Album: Astral Week
Van Morrison may be best known for the sweet and catchy “Brown-Eyed Girl,” but his phenomenal 1968 album Astral Weeks garnered the attention of critics and slowly developed a cult following that vaulted this album to number 19 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums. Astral Weeks is enigmatic, wandering, vulnerable and entirely stunning.
Like the rest of the album, “Sweet Thing” has sparse instrumentals that pushes Morrison’s poetic lyrics and scatting, rambling vocals forward. It is an emotional, lovesick portrait created by an incredibly open Morrison, something that will, in all likelihood, never happen again.
