Earlier in the summer, plans were unveiled for a new music project from Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, and Laura Bettinson, going by the name Ultraísta. With a few of the musical minds on board that helped shape and polish premiere acts such as Radiohead, Beck, and the Smashing Pumpkins, you can expect nothing less than cutting edge. With their self-titled debut set for October 2nd, tracks are beginning to surface.
“Static Light” is one of those aforementioned tracks. Sounding like something off of one of Radiohead’s more recent releases or Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace project (which Godrich played guitar and keys for), this track has the ability to feel both minimal and richly textured at the same time. Bettinson’s vocals help distinguish “Static Light” from the inevitable comparisons which have already been mentioned in this article and also help soften some of the percussive edges. Stay tuned for more to come from Ultraísta as their debut looms. . .
