Today’s song is Got To Be More Careful, from Jon Cleary. Jon Cleary is one of the most well known and respected New Orleans musicians. He has been releasing material for over 16 years now. If you haven’t heard of Jon Cleary before – well, you’r welcome – this guy’s music is just wonderful.
In Got To Be More Careful, as in many of his songs, we find a funky fusion of many types of genres. And of course it has that quasi-intangible, but always present, Nawlin’s shuffle to it. What separates Jon, musically, from most of his New Orleans contemporaries is that he doesn’t really ever use horns. The result is a smooth and waxy funk/jazz/jam sound in which the instruments are balanced and with more of a focus on the vocals and groove, as opposed to the volume-driven volatility of those who incorporate brass. Don’t get me wrong, there ain’t anything wrong with horns, but the difference in Jon’s music is still appreciable.
This is some great southern music to get one through yet another winter day. Enjoy!
