Today’s song of the day is Alley Cats by Hot Chip. It is a great example of this British band’s ability to give you an electric dance beat, but then have the song still emotionally be somber and reserved. Notice the way in which they employ slightly effected harmonies that float above the foundation of their own beat. They know how to simultaneously pull one in two emotional directions, a rare gift. Also, they sing some pretty amusing, and accurate, descriptions of cats (for those of you who would care about such things).
Leave it to a British band to create emotionally subdued dance/electric music that actually has perfect tone for winter time. If you enjoy this song and haven’t checked out their first LP, “One Life Stand”, you probably should rectify that. Enjoy!
