Wham! Out of nowhere The Strokes returned a few days ago with a brand new (free!) download of a song called “One Way Trigger.” It’s jarring to say the least. The first time I heard it, mass confusion took place. Who was this chick singing on their new song? Oops, turn out that’s Julian Casablancas, proving he can do more than his deep growl that some say sounds like he’s perpetually hung over. After getting over the initial shock of the strange sounding vocals, it turns out it’s a pretty great song. It was co-written by Julian and guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. and keeps with the strange 80s throwback synth sounds that populated 2011’s incredibly underrated ‘Angles’ album. Check it out here:

Since releasing this into the world, it has now been reported that this was just a teaser for their new album ‘Comedown Machine,’ scheduled for a March 26 release date. It will be preceded by the first “official” single, “All The Time,” which will arrive in our ears on February 19. Until then, enjoy this strange taster of an album sure to take them further into strange and exciting territory. Download the song for free from their official website, but do it fast, because they said they will stop offering it for free soon!
