Artist: The Paula Kelley Orchestra
Album: Airports – EP
Before branching out on her own, the multitalented Paula Kelley was a member of such 90’s bands as Drop Nineteens and Boy Wonder. After releasing two solo albums, she formed The Paula Kelley Orchestra and released the long-awaited Airports EP in 2008. The songs on this album explore the many facets of romantic relationships. The sound that Ms. Kelley creates is definitely not the average radio fodder and her delightful vocals will never be mistaken for anyone else. Her rich orchestral arrangements involve myriad instruments and lend a depth of sound and emotion to these songs that is far from commonplace.
The title track “Airports” explores the intimacy and naivety of young love. Quite the lyricist, Paula uses subtle word changes to illustrate the evolution of a romantic relationship. The song alternates between quiet verses backed by a minimal string arrangement and fully orchestrated verses all joined together by Paula’s ethereal, consistent vocal performance. Experience “Airports” below and enjoy a layover in a new musical environment.
