Today’s song is A Little Death and is from The Neighbourhood‘s 2012 EP ‘Thank You’. The band claims their genre is black and white. But it’s really something like dark and slightly psychedelic electro rock with some pop sensibilities.
In this song the bass line is the anchor, strutting forward with it’s unceasing robotic like rhythm. The drums then reinforce this with a little side steppin’ beat. Over this the vocals soar, and become the true focus of the song, sung in that slightly-talking type of way. It’s very personal with the listener, especially because the chorus asks you to “touch me, make me feel like I am breathing, feel like I am human”. But the best part is the static rhythm section, around which dynamic sounds swell and swirl. Enjoy.
