Despite its title, So Many Ways To Die is actually an uplifting song by the folk-pop band, Bombadil, that’s been on continuous rotation on my Zune recently. The song’s main message is that sometimes the difference between success and failure is your perspective, which a concept that hit pretty close to home this week.
“So many ways to think
How differently we interpret the brink
Between the side of life worth living
And the point at which you’re better off to sink”
Just because a situation/relationship/life didn’t go exactly as planned doesn’t mean that you’ve failed. It only means you have to look a little harder to find the positive aspects of the story. It’s like the old cliché about every cloud having a silver lining.
As Bombadil goes on to sing, “You are exactly who you choose / You’re only lying to you”. This is another very important point to remember. YOU get to define you, not somebody else. Other people’s opinions should have no bearing on who you are and more importantly, you have to give yourself a fair shake. You can’t be unrealistic in your expectations for yourself.
It’s hard to believe that a song with such a somber title could make you feel better about your place in life, but Bombadil manages to help their listeners realize that your perception really is your reality.
