Fitz and the Tantrums – Breakin’ the Chains of Love

Song Of The Day

Artist: Fitz and the Tantrums
Album: Pickin’ Up the Pieces (2010)
Song: Breaking the Chains of Love
Label: Dangerbird

Today’s song came from a band recommended to me by a fellow University of Dayton alum, Mike Williams called, Fitz and the Tantrums. Their style is probably considered indie, but there are obvious influences like late ’50s and early ’60s R&B, pop, and the Doors at play. Also, there is lots of soul. Quite frankly, I was not expecting to hear something this retro and there is a ton of momentum behind this band. As for the song, it is one with a huge Doors influence; especially the keyboard. As a listener, you can tell pretty distinctly that the front man, Michael Fitzpatrick can sing well. The bass line and the saxophone are also pretty stellar. If you like any of the styles or the band mentioned earlier, give this group a shot. If for nothing else, take a break from an overproduced top-40 song and listen to some soul!
