Hidden between upbeat songs of found love and tales of heartbreak hides a gem on Gavin Degraw’s third studio album ‘Free’. Beginning with a simple piano line, ‘Dancing Shoes’ feels as if it is the resurrection of Marc Cohn’s 1991 classic ‘Walking in Memphis”. This mellow love song hits a subtle climax when he begs the subject to ‘tell it to him straight’.
In an era where many albums are overproduced and bands lock themselves away for months at a time, Degraw impressively recorded this top 20 album in less than two weeks. The producer Camus Celli initially worked with Degraw for an earlier demo of his debut album ‘Chariot’. He is best known for working with such artists as Tina Turner and David Byrne.
