Nine Inch Nails’ “The Perfect Drug”

Song Of The Day

Out of nowhere, Nine Inch Nails (and How To Destroy Angels) mastermind Trent Reznor announced a brand new forthcoming Nine Inch Nails record. Not just that he was working on one, but that it was complete and would arrive courtesy of Columbia Records later this year. We’ve long suspected he was working on a new album, but this solid confirmation is enough to make you celebrate. And what better way to do so than listen to one of their best and most explosive tracks, “The Perfect Drug?”

Recorded for the soundtrack to David Lynch’s baffling film Lost Highway, this song is the stopgap between 1994’s universally acclaimed ‘The Downward Spiral’ and 1999’s sprawling masterpiece ‘The Fragile.’ With its use of strings, electronics and ear-shattering dynamics wrapped up in an incredibly catchy chorus, this song stands alone in their catalog at a unique crossroads in their career and an outstanding achievement in blending heavy music with elements that your more casual listener could enjoy. There’s so many great moments: the string-filled build up that the starts the song, the insane drum solo, and the whispered, tragic ending to the song are just a few. What’s your favorite part? Regardless, for those that love Nine Inch Nails, this truly is “The Perfect Drug.”
