2009 was a very special year for supergroup history. That was the year in which members from Bright Eyes, She & Him and My Morning Jacket gave birth to a self-titled album that mixed the best of contemporary alternative rock music, country and folk into a 15 tracked honest masterpiece.
Out of the tunes that compose Monsters Of Folk, the second track is probably one of the weirdest yet easy listening songs from the past 5 years. Say Please opens with individually sang verses and vocal harmonies driven by a country styled tempo and a western cantina piano on the back, only to explode halfway through with a guitar solo that reminds of a Sonic Youth rampage.
Say Please showcases the spirit of the full album crafted by the masterminds of Jim James, Conor Oberst, M. Ward and Mike Mogis: it all starts quietly and gentle, but it can all become a raw Americana wild party out of nowhere only to come back down to sounds that any grandparent could tap their feet along. And dance as well, why the hell not?
