Miles Davis needs no introduction, so let’s take a look instead at what many consider to be the pinnacle jazz album of all time, Davis’s Kind of Blue. Released August 17th, 1959, on Columbia Records. Although exact numbers are hard to come up with, it is widely considered that Kind of Blue was not only the best selling Miles Davis record, but the best selling Jazz record of all time, going quadruple platinum as of 2008. Consisting of an all-star line up, including drummer Jimmy Cobb and saxophonists John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, a total of 5 songs were released on the album, and would go on to influence almost all styles of music to this day.
Here is “So What,” played live back in 1959, just a few months after its release.
