So despite being a big fan of Hard Rock, Metal, and other more extreme forms of music, there’s one weakness of mine that’s reared its head lately: electropop with female vocals. It started with Lana Del Rey. Soon that wasn’t enough so now it’s Charli XCX, Chvrches, and now Lorde. It’s just fun music with a great toe-tapping beat. And unlike their more disposable more mainstream counterparts, these young ladies actually have lyrics that are witty, sarcastic, and sometimes downright dark. It’s probable you’ve heard this song before, but listen to it one more time and try to deny the fun of this track that pokes fun at popular culture and the message behind the cute name-dropping.
Lorde’s only 16 years old, writes all her own lyrics and co-writes all the music. She’s even done well on Billboard in her first week sales with over 100,000 copies sold. But with this level of attention comes inevitable controversy. Some have accused the song of being racist for naming Maybachs and other topics favorited by rappers. However, if you listen to all the words, she names other ridiculous non-rap excesses, such as tigers on gold leashes, which is more The Hangover than hip hop. People need to stop trying to find problems where there are none and just enjoy it for what this Lorde song is: a fun, catchy song with a little social commentary thrown in for people like me who can’t help but overanalyze music, even if you’re just supposed to nod your head to the beat.
