Today’s song is from Kendrick Lamar, the L.A. based rapper who burst onto the scene with one of 2012’s best albums ‘good kid m.A.A.d. city’. Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe is the album’s 3rd song and is one of the many gems found on this LP. Kendrick flows over the a that sit somewhere between a slick west coast rap beat and a swaggering R&B beat. Kendrick shows off the wide variety of manners in which he will interact with this beat and rhythm. Sometimes his flow is sing-songy, sometimes it’s sticks right with the beat with extra emphasis on each rhyme and then often he moves into an unstructured double-time flow with varied rhyming patterns – the last of which is pure ear candy. His ability to use his lyrics and style to quickly up or down shift is quiet incredible. Plus, while the beat always returns to how it began, it is very dynamic with many little slightly-psychedelic surprises (a-la Outkast’s ‘ATLiens’).
All these factors add with each other into a fantastic hip hop number. It’s no surprise many agree he is one of the more promising rappers in a long, long time.
