Artist: Jeff Beck
Song: “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”
It’s not too often you hear of instrumental albums going platnium, but Jeff Beck’s “Wired” did just that in 1976. Working with keyboardist Jan Hammer, Beck’s eighth studio release relied heavily on synthetic sounds, blazing a new trail in the guitarist’s career.
“Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” was originally composed by Charles Mingus for his most influential and well known release, “Mingus Ah Um.” Substituting saxophone for electric guitar, Beck is able to infuse his own emotions into the song, creating a focal point on an album already saturated with what would later become classic tracks.
