Today’s Song of the Day comes to us from the teeming metropolis of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and the singer/songwriter/guitarist JD McPherson. “North Side Gal” is the type of song that gets under the skin and causing your toes to tap and leave you humming it all day long. It’s reminiscent of the music of a bygone era, and it’s nice to hear something so timeless and yet very contemporary at the same time. With ladies like Amy Winehouse and Adele leading the way of the contemporary blues comeback over the last ten years, McPherson’s style is equivalent to bringing back the days of classic rock and roll.
McPherson is a throwback to the grand old days of rockabilly with musical influences the likes of Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and Little Richard. But that’s not where the layers of music end, also throw into the mix contemporary influences like Led Zeppelin or the Wu Tang Clan, and you get a sound that is fresh, unique and instantly classic.
Staying true to the vintage sound, McPherson recorded his debut album, “Signs and Signifiers” using vintage mics, old amps and even a Berlant reel-to-reel recorder, all analog, which adds to the retro sound.
