This track by Jamie Smith of The xx was released in June of 2011, back when days were longer and temperatures were higher, and it certainly oozes those characteristics, which is a major reason why it is being chosen at this time. An upbeat synth, some optimistic lyrics, and a little steel drum may be all you need to lift you out of the gloomy weather; or at least hold you over until The xx release their next album later in the year.
2011 proved to be a great year for Jamie xx solo career. First came the release of We’re new Here which reinterpreted the late Gil Scot-Heron’s final album and helped usher the wave of young talent coming forth from the UK under the dub-step umbrella (James Blake or SBTRKT ring a bell?). An excellent Essential’s Mixtape for BBC Radio 1’s prestigious DJ showcase followed, which is where we can hear the early versions of this single. What will 2012 hold in store for any of his ventures? Only time will tell; but for now warm up to “Far Nearer.”
