Artist: J Dilla
Song: “The Diff’rence”
Highly acclaimed (perhaps the highest acclaimed) hip-hop producer J Dilla, who passed away in 2006, would have celebrated his birthday yesterday, and many fans of the beatmaker’s music have dedicated the entire month of February to the artist.
Dilla worked with a huge number of rappers and hip-hop artists during his career, but it is perhaps his instrumental work that will be remembered with the most gratitude. His final release, 2006’s Donuts, has inspired an entire generation to make beats, breaking new ground in the hip-hop genre while maintaining the core values that had been built in the generations before it.
Check out “The Diff’rence” below, off of Dilla’s Donuts. It’s a solid taste from an album that has inspired a staple in the hip hop clothing community — a black t-shirt, with the simple words “J Dilla Changed My Life” printed on the front in white lettering.
