It seems as if Frank Ocean has floated into America’s collective consciousness practically overnight. The truth is the artist has been slowly brewing for years — first as a ghostwriter for artists such as Brandy and Justin Bieber, then as a member of Tyler, the Creator’s OFWGKTA, after which his debut mix tape was released to critical acclaim.
Titled Nostalgia, Ultra, Ocean’s first effort garnered attention from some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including Jay-Z and Kanye West, who featured Ocean on their recent Watch the Throne LP.
Needless to say when the artist finally released his first full-length LP, Channel Orange, it was a huge hit. Frank Ocean was recently featured on Saturday Night Live, where guitarist John Mayer accompanied the R&B singer in what was arguably one of the best SNL sets in recent seasons.
“Pyramids,” featured below, is the climax of Channel Orange, Clocking in at over nine minutes. The epic song details a complicated relationship Ocean was presumably in, complete with a John Mayer solo to finish things off.
Make sure it’s late night, kick back, maybe pour yourself a glass of wine, and settle into “Pyramids.”
