In honor of their incendiary performance this past Sunday at Houston’s Free Press Summer Fest, today’s song of the day is probably this bright up and coming band’s signature song, “MoneyGrabber.” This song is pure pop perfection in the purest sense: it’s fun, catchy, memorable and to the point. The sound is classic Motown vibes with a modern indie sensibility.
The band formed in 2008 and have rocketed into the public’s consciousness quickly. It’s possible you’ve already heard this song or band since they’ve been getting a lot of attention in the past two years. They’ve been on the Tonight Show and Conan O’Brien, toured with Maroon 5 and were one of Rolling Stone’s “bands to watch” in 2011. After touring relentlessly for their debut album Pickin’ Up The Pieces, they’ve been in the studio working on their sophomore release. If it’s as good as their debut, then this band will be around for years to come, which is definitely a good thing for music lovers everywhere.
As you can imagine from the title, the song deals with the familiar and frustrating relationships one can develop with people that are more interested in the money than love. This song is a sort of “kiss off” to those people in your life. If you’ve had problems with these kind of people in your life, then this is your anthem. Even if not, it’s the sort of chorus so memorable you’ll be humming it for days. Thank the powers that be that bands like this and Alabama Shakes bringing an element of “realness” and soul to modern rock music.
