I found Elbow last night: they were the musical guests on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Though I only just discovered them, they certainly are not a new band. They’ve been playing together since the early 90s and they won the 2008 Mercury Music Prize for their album The Seldom Seen Kid. “Lippy Kids” from their latest album, Build a Rocket Boys!, is the song I heard last night. The soundscape is subtle but it works so well for this piece.
Guy Garvey’s vocals have this sort of *David Gilmour meets Peter Gabriel* quality (i.e., his voice is freaking amazing). “Lippy Kids” is a haunting illustration of the melancholy nostalgia that we thirty-somethings might experience when we witness a group of teenagers hanging out someplace and we are, as a result, brought face to face with the memory of our own golden days of youth. This is an emotionally powerful song — I’ve had this track on repeat all day and I can hardly wait to spend some time exploring more music from Elbow.
