There are those rare few moments when a cover song becomes more than just bashing out someone else’s song – an X factor that makes the song uniquely gel with the artist covering it. An easy example is Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower.” But one you might not expect is Deftones’ cover of the Duran Duran song “The Chauffeur.”
New Wave purists might rankle their nose at the thought, but Deftones bring their signature atmospheric heaviness and use it to add a fantastic level of depth and sadness. In the original song tragedy was only apparent when reading the lyrics. When the synths are traded for guitar lines and paired with frontman Chino Moreno’s breathy whisper and pained sing-song voice, it captures a palpable resignation and hopelessness that gives one chills. A moment like this is cathartic on some days. So put on some headphones, close your eyes and be swallowed by the sorrow of this stunning rendition of a classic.
