David Lee Roth’s “Yankee Rose”

Song Of The Day

Happy Birthday to Diamond Dave! Yes, this is far different than the site’s usual fare, but you expect it from me by now, right? Anyway, today we celebrate the birthday of legendary Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth with a song from his best solo album, ‘Eat ‘Em and Smile.’ The song “Yankee Rose” opens the album in classic DLR style, as he talks to us about, you guessed it, a woman. Not just any woman though. An American one. You could even perhaps consider this a patriotic song, singing the praises of the beautiful women of the USA. Listen to this fist-pumping, stone cold 80s rock jam:

This was his first feature length album after leaving Van Halen, so expectations were high. Fortunately he did not disappoint, putting together a band of some of the finest rock musicians ever to grace an instrument, including virtuoso guitarist Steve Vai, bass player extraordinaire Billy Sheehan and top sticks man Greg Bissonette. What they created together was something arguably just as good as a Van Halen album, with killer riffs, David’s sharp wit and  and a powerful party-time lust. If you’ve ever enjoyed Van Halen and never ventured into this unique singer’s solo material, this song and this album are an excellent place to start.
