Let’s keep the birthday celebration going by celebrating Will Champion’s birthday. He’s the longtime drummer for the world-famous British rock band Coldplay. But no, we won’t burden you with some of their modern day, overly produced glossy pop. No, let’s go back to before even the release of their first album to the song “Bigger Stronger” from the Blue Room EP, which was released in 1999. Listen to this song from before they had world-conquering ambitions and instead just made really good rock music:
Those guitars, those forlorn lyrics are the sign of a band with something still left to accomplish; regular guys who had relatable troubles and a certain fragility. They may have been accused of being Radiohead-lite in these early days, but at least there was some heart it compared to the top of the world posturing of current day Chris Martin who’s married to one of the most beautiful and successful women in the world. Sorry if this comes off like a bitter hipster who like a band before they were popular, but from this early stage up through ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’ they were a fantastic band making beautifully melancholy Britpop and it’s hard not to miss that simpler time of better music from this band. Regardless, happy birthday Will, thanks for providing us with the percussion for some great songs.
