The fourth annual Catskill Chill Festival will be kicking off on sixty acts (that will fit five stages) this weekend up in Hancock, NY, at gorgeous Camp Minglewood. The grounds at this festival, which are so critical to the experience, are fantastic. Winding sidewalks through hills and dales peppered with log cabins surround a beautiful lake overlooked by the main stage. It’s quite special to be able to soak in amazing music like The Motet and Particle and simply turn around and boom – the view is like a landscape calendar, but one you actually want to look at.
This year’s line up is pretty fantastic. Featuring top shelf acts such as Kung Fu, Tea Leaf Green, Brothers Past, Conspirator, Twiddle, Dopapod, and Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds – among many others, Chill will be great. Not to mention, the Royal Family will be there in force: Eric Krasno Band, Shmeeans & The Expanded Consciousness, Alan Evans Trio, and Lettuce will perform. For those who don’t know about the Royal Family, it’s a label based in Brooklyn, NY (mainly funk/jazz) founded by the gentlemen of Soulive and associates. Whenever the Royal Family is present, good times will be had. Guaranteed. Also, as if there wasn’t enough great music already, Dopapod and Papadosio will combine forces as Dopadosio to close out the festival Sunday night.

Chill will also have an acoustic stage bringing the likes of Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past) & Friends as well acoustic sets from Brock Butler, Dan Collins, and two sets from the unimaginably talented and generally as non-acoustic as it gets: Consider the Source. Last year, CTS played an impromptu acoustic set on a sidewalk at Chill reasonably late night. It’s difficult to describe how special that set was. Not only was it an intimate affair between passers by (most of which did a double take and stuck around) and the band, it was a rare opportunity for the boys to showcase their acoustic skills with a multitude of exotic Middle Eastern instruments. Someone caught the set on video, and it’s been a CTS fan mainstay ever since. If you watch closely, you can even see some of Capital Zen (who will also be performing this year) bathing in the vibes. But it doesn’t stop with a stellar line up: there’re also activities! There will be yoga classes every day, some of which accompanied by beats from Cosmal. Also, Catskill’s Shakedown area, known as Vendor Village, will feature a local farmer’s market serving fresh and delicious eats from around the area. Cabins are available for rental, and please believe they are worth it. Hot showers, bathrooms, bunk beds, oh Lord, it’s paradise. So do yourself a favor and Chill with us this weekend – you know you want to…
