Caravan of Thieves


The couple that started Caravan of Thieves, Fuzz and Carrie Sangiovanni, tell us that their group “started as a romantic, bohemian vision of a couple making music, performing on the road, in parks, venues, traveling around and avoiding responsibility as much as possible.” And while it is more than just the couple making the music now, that description does ring true. This isn’t your traditional band, or live show, as they really invested much into the bohemian vision, and avoiding responsibility, in addition to the making of music.

Caravan of Thieves is a four piece group comprised of guitars, violin, and upright bass. While their instruments are more traditional, their energy, show, and resulting music are not. They use gypsy jazz rhythms, which they then light a fire underneath and join with nuanced vocal harmonies and intriguing story telling. It’s at times western, at times has a gilded-jazz feel, at times swingy, and often is something totally unique. But it’s always theatrical and inclusive. The whole idea is to draw the listener into their world, and to possibly even join in, as their audience is known to clap, dance, and enthusiastically sing along.

As the band themselves has said, “If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton’s house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they hired.” That sounds like a party worth being at…
