Sam Cooke’s iconic civil rights movement song “A Change is Gonna Come”, originally recorded in 1963 has long stood as a historically significant song portraying many of the uncertainties and hardships of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. Many artists have covered the song across all generations, some notable covers being Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, and Seal.
A unique new cover has recently surfaced from indie-folk artist Ben Sollee. He creates a distinctive sound combining R&B with a smooth cello line and crisp, fresh vocals. It is easy to become immersed in this new style that makes the listener feel an intimate connection with the artist.
Originally starting off his career playing cello and singing in Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet, Sollee has moved on to writing and recording his own music with his label, Sub-Pop Records.
Often basing much of his music off of political, economic, and environmental issues, “A Change is Gonna Come” nicely compliments his style and unique playing style. He is definitely a new artist worth keeping an eye on in the future.
