It’s hard to believe that 1. Arctic Monkeys has been together for over a decade and 2. nobody has picked this song as song of the day yet. This is such a fantastically catchy song from what many (including this journalist) consider to be one of their best albums yet. It’s got a brooding Black Keys-esque swagger with a Brit Rock twist. The production even sounds like something you could mistake for the timeless cool of Danger Mouse. It’s not over-produced and sounds a bit garage-y, but the punched-in background vocals let you know that much care and craft went into creating this late night pop jam. Listen to what will inevitably be a song that ends up on your end of year best-of mix, “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?”
You can laugh, but haven’t we all had that friend or loved one at some point in our life when it seemed like she only called you up when she was inebriated? The frustration of trying to call that person back at a decent hour but then they don’t return your call. The lyrics to this song capture this frustration perfectly. We’ve all experienced it, so it’s about time somebody put that feeling to incredibly catchy music.
