In a city that has shaken festivals left and right, we have a newcomer stepping up to the plate this summer, with an eclectic cast of electronic and hip-hop artists to try and secure it for years to come. New York City’s Governor Island will host the first ever Governors Ball Music Festival on Saturday June 18th. Just a quick ferry away from Downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn are the grassy lawns providing some of the best views of the city and a full summer’s day worth of activities, food, drinks, and of course; music.
The line-up is packed with heavy-hitters such as Girl Talk, Empire of the Sun, Big Boi, Passion Pit (DJ Set), Neon Indian, Das Racist, People Under the Stairs, Mac Miller, Miami Horror, Outasight , and Reptar on two different stages with no over-lapping sets. Pretty Lights will close out the evening with a brand new state-of-the-art production that is sure to compete with the famous skyline just across the river.
This diverse group spans electronica, indie rock, dance and hip-hop but the common theme is that all of these acts have the ability to make you move. Governors Island has successfully hosted other concerts in summers past but never have we seen such a high-profile and diverse collection of artists in one day. In addition to the action going on at the stages, there will also be Ping Pong tables throughout the island, in addition to the pre-existing Basketball and Beach Volleyball courts. If that’s too sobering for you, perhaps you can take a shot at the Beer Pong tournament where the winning team will win backstage passes, merchandise, and 2012 Gov Ball tickets as well as a crack at the $50,000 prize in the World Series of Beer Pong tournament.
Tickets are $95 and for $150 you can get VIP tickets which include access to VIP lounge and concessions, special beer and wine services, special restroom facilities and exclusive viewing areas for both of the stages. Go over to http://governorsballmusicfestival.com/tickets/ for more ticket information and check back in with the Governors Ball website for more information, exclusive artist interviews, and the soon to be announced schedule for this great day of events.
