8MM’s ‘Between the Devil & Two Black Hearts’ – Album Review

Album Reviews

In all honestly, it must be stated that that prior to listening to this album, this author had never even heard of the band 8MM. This is a fact that quickly changed after multiple listens of ‘Between the Devil & 8mm between the devil and two black hearts reviewTwo Black Heartst’, and their back catalog will soon be filling into my music collection.

8MM is the brainchild of musician, producer and audio engineer Sean Beavan, along with his wife Juliette. Sean has worked with and produced a multitude of artists that include Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Guns N Roses, System of a Down, God Lives Underwater, and many more. Chances are that you have heard some of 8MM’s music before without even realizing it, as 80% of their back catalog has been licensed to film and television. It has been used in shows that include Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Moonlight and the film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Despite the heavy licensing of their music in film and television, most people have never heard of 8MM, which is something the band is trying to change. In September of 2012, the band launched a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to fund the marketing and manufacturing of their current release, along with tour expenses. The band raised $10K more than their projected goal of $30K with the help of fans and some fellow musicians and actors.

8MM’s You Brought The Fire

Their album, “Between the Devil & Two Black Hearts” was released in the autumn of 2012. One could go through the album and tell you the tracks that standout, but with 8 tracks and clocking in at just over 32 minutes, there is no room for filler. 8MM is a band that defies the label of a specific music genre and this album is no exception. Each track contains elements of blues, rock, industrial and so much more. “You Brought the Fire” has an underlying groove that pulls you in and mesmerizes you throughout, while the hard rocking blues riffs of “Kin” will have you stomping your feet. “Around of the Sun” has an industrial beat that kicks in and will have you bobbing your head immediately. Even after multiple listens it’s not possible to pick one track that is a definite favorite, just start the album over and listen to the whole thing again – that’s really the best prescription. With its sleek mixture of musical genres, combined with Juliette’s sultry voice and Sean’s soulful vocals, “Between the Devil & Two Black Hearts” is an album that should not be missed.
